Alton Towers Holding Coaster Design Competition as Part of National Science Week

Poole, UK -- To celebrate National Science Week next March and the launch of its new world first rollercoaster, the Alton Towers Resort is launching a design competition for students. The competition will give them the chance to use their science knowledge to design a world beating rollercoaster and win the opportunity to be amongst the first to ride the Resort’s newest ride when it opens in March 2013.

Judged by a panel of rollercoaster experts at the Alton Towers Resort, the competition will allow students to put their science knowledge into practice by designing a ride, taking into account forces, gravity and energy. The winning design will receive an exclusive ride for their class on the Resort’s newest rollercoaster when it opens in March during National Science Week.

Rachael Cotton from the Alton Towers Resort comments, “With the recent news that fewer girls are taking physics at higher education, rollercoasters are an ideal way to engage in science and make it fun and that’s something we are really passionate about here are the Resort. We will have a range of activities taking place throughout National Science Week that will really bring the subject to life and with a new world’s first rollercoaster coming to the park, students can learn all about speed, acceleration and kinetic energy through an exciting and real life example.”

The Alton Towers Resort will host a number of events throughout National Science Week from 18-22 March 2013. Activities will include the Resort’s rollercoasters and relativity talk, two immersive 360 degree theatre shows and Dr Ken from Teacher’s TV performing his entertaining science circus show! Prices start from £12 per pupil for secondary students and £6.75 pp for primary children which includes entry into the theme park. Packages that include a science talk plus entry into the theme park are available at £14.50 per secondary pupil and £9.25 per primary pupil.

To enter, submit your entries to education@alton-towers.com or visit altontowers.com/national-science-week before Friday 14th December. Entries can be in diagram or word format but please include:
  • A description of the ride and some of the key features e.g. what makes it different, how tall is it, how fast will it travel, does it go upside down?
  • How you have incorporated Science into the design – think about speed, forces, energy – how will the rollercoaster create the energy to move?
  • Some helpful tips – rollercoasters constantly convert gravitational potential energy into kinetic, sound and thermal energy. Friction is used on most rollercoaster brake systems.
